Ottawa is the capital city of Canada located in the Province of Ontario. The city is located on the Ottawa River and several bridges to Quebec its neighbor and the city of Gatineau connect it, which is on the northern shore of the Ottawa River. Ottawa is Canada's fourth largest city
with a population of over 800,000 residents, and growing.

History

Ottawa was the original and long residence of the Odawa, First Nations, people. They were an Algonquin people who occupied portions of the Ottawa River area and they were hunting and gathering society. In fact, in 1983 the Algonquin's of Golden Lake brought a claim to the government so they could get back their Aboriginal rights Ontario. Negotiations remain ongoing. In 1857 it was decided that Queen Victoria would choose a capital for the Province of Canada and she picked Ottawa. 

Climate
 
Ottawa has a varied but humid climate. There is an extreme range in temperatures from an average high of 21 degrees Fahrenheit (-6.1 degrees Celsius) in January to a high of 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.5 degrees Celsius) in July.

Transportation
 
The area is served by freeways, the largest and most central one being Highway 417 (it is also called The Queensway), Ottawa-Carleton Regional Road 174, Highway 416 (veterans Memorial Highway which connects Ottawa to the rest of the areas highways. 
 
There is also a public transit system. OC Transpo runs it, which is a department of the city of Ottawa. There are regular buses that travel on fixed routes, and a bus rapid transit system (BRT) that operates on the transitway. There is also a light rail transit (LRT) system which is also known as the O-Train. Transfers and bus passes are accepted on all of the systems. 
 
The river systems in Ottawa connect to the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River. The Rideau Canal and off shot of the Rideau river makes its way through the city and during the winter is open as a form of transportation downtown for about 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles) for ice skaters. This is known as the world's largest ice skating rink.



Recreation & Sports
 
One of the biggest past times in the area is its sports teams and sporting events. The area is home to the National Hockey Leagues Ottawa Senators who play in the Scotiabank Place, which is in the suburban community of Kanata. It is also home to the Ontario's Hockey Leagues Ottawa 67's who play in Lansdowne Parks Civic Centre. It was also home to the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships. 
 
It was home to a minor league baseball team called the Ottawa Voyageurs who played in the Ottawa Baseball Stadium. They only lasted one year though.
 
The area is also home to many activities that are more casual. These would include skating on the Rideau Canal and curling in winter. Cycling and running along the Ottawa River are popular summer past times. Ultimate is played year round and skiing and hiking is popular in the Greenbelt and many parks in the area. There are also several golf courses in the area. Ice fishing is popular on the Ottawa River and there are cricket clubs for all ages. There is a rugby team called the Ottawa Harlequins, which eastern Ottawa's top players compete on each summer in Rugby Canada Super League. 

Education & Industry
 
Ottawa is at the heart of the area that extends into Quebec and because of this, the city is bilingual. There are several universities and colleges n the area also including Dominican University College Saint Paul University and the University of Ottawa. Ottawa's largest employer is the Federal Government with jobs in computer, electronics and other highly technical fields in second place. 

Culture
 
There are many interesting tourist type attractions that you do not have to be a tourist to enjoy in the are. These include the Royal Canadian Mint, Canada Aviation Museum, the Museum of nature and the National Gallery. There are also many movie theatres in the area, some that specialize in foreign films, early releases and older films. 
 
There is a popular Jazz Festival and Bluesfest held every summer, along with one of the largest International Chamber Music Festival in the world. Winterlude is a festival held every winter that has contests of ice carving among other things. The National Arts Centre is a year round venue for Dance and Musical performances.
